Create a safety plan  Back

Living with domestic violence can be dangerous, but leaving a batterer can be even more dangerous. A safety plan helps you think about the things you can do to ensure the safety of yourself and your children. You can build a plan on your own, or Family Safety Network staff and advocates can help you. Your safety plan might include some of the following:

bulletEstablish a network of people you trust to whom you can go for support
bulletMemorize important phone numbers of people you can call in an emergency
bulletTeach your children when, who and how to call for help
bulletShow your children where to go in your home, or plan to have them escape to a neighbor when violence occurs
bulletWhen fleeing a violent incident don’t be cornered in a small room with only one exit
bulletWhen violence occurs stay away from the kitchen, garage or other rooms containing items that could be used as weapons
bulletPlan a safe place to go that is unknown to the batterer
bulletPractice how to get out of your home safely by identifying doors, windows and stairways
bulletLeave a packed bag with a friend or relative that includes extra sets of keys, money, change of clothes, baby supplies and important documents like green cards, passports, birth certificates and important phone numbers
bulletGather documents and other evidence related to your abuse and find a safe place to store them
bulletSpecific safety plan guidelines are available through FSN for:
